Each of the airbags are inflated to the optimum level, depending on the severity and the direction of the impact. If necessary, the system deactivates the fuel pump and disengages the car battery. Also, an improved head airbag system protects occupants in a side impact by inflating side airbags and a protective curtain airbag across the side windows. Conveniently, the Coded Driveaway Protection a feature that constantly changes the electronic key/ignition code; prevents the engine from starting without using the right key.

The optional navigation systems in the BMW 5 Series Sedan are operated simply and effectively via the iDrive system. Via the Controller, this intuitive system is also used to operate a range of other functions such as cabin climate control and the entertainment and communication options, including CDs, the radio and the telephone.
